craftspeople. No two are alike. If you have preferences please
let us know when you order. Pidamiya (Thank you).
You now have the option of either using the form
to write to us with your order and any special requirements,
(you can order and pay via a credit card, debit card or a personal
check,) or you can phone or fax the order in. (We are at present
looking at getting an 800#)
Please remember that you are commissioning the quarrier to go
and dig for the stone, and the craftsperson to make the item
when you order one of these crafts.
The
stems on this page are all pine. If you want sumac they will
be more expensive as the wood is harder to obtain. Please see

Turtles
|
Turtles
are a traditional item within the Pipestone Dakota craftspeople.
The Turtle means a number of things, one being fertility,
mainly because the turtle lays many eggs. Also protection
is at hand with one of these little people near to you.
They of course go into their shell for protection and
will assist you to do the same!
As
you can see the stone that is used can often be really
attractive. The women who craft these turtles get the
thin stone from the quarriers as Pipes need a specific
thickness. They also get the leftovers from pipemakers,
so that no stone is wasted.
The
cost of the time that is spent making this craft is
as follows:
Extra
small = $7.25
|
Small
= $9.50
|
Medium
= $15.00
|
Large
= $26.00

Arrowhead
Paperweights
|
Arrowheads
are a bit of an oxymoron when it comes to Catlinite
because the quarries were always a place of peace. However
people associate arrowheads with Native Americans, and
so the original craftspeople decided to add the two
feather design to give a positive aspect to the arrowhead.
The two feathers symbolize friendship. You will see
that same two feather design on the front of the Little
Feather building where we are located.
Again the stone for these items come from thinner leftovers,
so that none is wasted.
The
cost of the time that is spent making this craft is
as follows:
Small
(1 x 3")= $7.25
|
Medium
(2 x 4") = $11.50

Catlinite
from the ancient quarries in Pipestone MN
|
Catlinite
can only be found at the ancient quarries in Pipestone,
MN. Only Native Americans are allowed to quarry for
it. Ours is quarried in the traditional and spiritual
way by Dakota quarriers who have been handed down the
expertise by fathers and grandfathers.
The payment is for the quarrier’s time to obtain the
stone for you. A small pipe takes approx. 2 pounds of
stone.
Quarrier’s
time = $10 a pound.
|
(Free
permits are available for enrolled Native Americans
to quarry themselves. If you wish to quarry alone please
give up to 2 months to reach the stone as it lays under
earth and quartzite rock and needs to be extracted with
hand tools carefully.
Contact Pipestone National Monument for details.)
